After years of trying to get a Janis Joplin biopic off the ground, Shailene Woodley is now being touted as the one to make it happen. Janis Joplin is one of the most iconic and influential singers of all time.
Despite her short career in the late 1960s, Janis Joplin managed to become a cultural icon and was called the First Lady of Rock n Roll. Many big Hollywood stars have tried to bring her life story to the big screen, but none have succeeded to date.
Citing a report from the Variety page on Thursday September 12, 2024, Shailene Woodley will star in and produce the Janis Joplin biopic. The film received a budget of $2.5 million from the California Film Commission, filmed for 30 days, and spent approximately $10 million on qualifying expenses.
There is currently no further information regarding the director or other cast members, but Woodley appears to be taking a more dominant role in the film's development. As previously mentioned, various attempts have been made to produce a film about Janis Joplin over the past 20 years.
In 2004, Pink was planned to be the lead. But in 2006, it was Zooey Deschanel's turn to play the rock icon . Unfortunately, Deschanel's film The Gospel According to Janis never materialized. The music biopic itself is considered a superhero genre in the award show; attracting a lot of attention from the audience, but also not free from harsh criticism.
For actors, musical biopics are a great opportunity to showcase their ability to transform into respected, famous figures. Rami Malek's Oscar win for Bohemian Rhapsody and Jamie Foxx's Ray are now the benchmarks that every actor involved in a music biopic wants to achieve.
However, not all biopics can meet everyone's expectations. This can be seen from the failure of Back to Black , a controversial biopic about the life of the late Amy Winehouse that only managed to score 35% on the Rotten Tomatoes site. Shailene Woodley certainly has high hopes that the Janis Joplin biopic she stars in will receive a warmer reception.
