YG Entertainment has also spoken out regarding the sexual crime case using deepfake technology that has dragged in many Kpop idols, including BLACKPINK. The agency from BLACKPINK to BABYMONSTER stated that it is ready to take legal action against deepfake videos using their artists' faces.
The agency also ensured that legal action will be taken firmly and continuously. "We will take continuous and firm action regarding all legal violations that occur against our artists' rights," said YG Entertainment, as quoted by Korea JoongAng Daily on Tuesday September 3, 2024.
Not only YG Entertainment, Cube Entertainment as the agency of (G)I-DLE also released a similar statement. The agency explained that it was collecting evidence related to the use of the girl group members' faces in deepfake videos.
Cube Entertainment also promised to be ready to take firm legal action because the circulating video was said to damage the image and mentality of idols. "The malicious deepfake videos circulating online have seriously damaged our artists' reputations and have had a serious mental impact," Cube Entertainment said.
"We are collecting all relevant evidence and will take firm legal action without leniency," he continued. This statement comes after many agencies have expressed their readiness to combat sexual crimes using deepfakes.
The stance came after idols became victims of the case. Some of the agencies include JYP Entertainment as the agency of TWICE, ITZY, and NMIXX; then ADOR as the agency of NewJeans, and Woollim Entertainment as the agency of Kwon Eun-bi.
The deepfake sexual crime case became a hot topic in South Korea after a number of chat rooms on Telegram were first discovered that were allegedly used to create and distribute deepfake pornographic material. The chatroom names are 100 South Korean universities. One of the chatrooms has over 133,000 members.
Local media reported that many of the deepfake victims came from various ages and backgrounds, such as junior high school students, high school students, teachers, and even military personnel. Some of the victims of deepfake sexual crimes were also said to be gender-neutral.
