Yoo Yeon Seok is currently attracting attention for his role in "When the Phone Rings". In the MBC drama, the actor born in 1984 plays the character Baek Sa Eon, a guy who looks cold, but is secretly crazy about his wife, Hong Hee Joo (Chae Soo Bin).
Due to the popularity of "When the Phone Rings", Yeon Seok's old interviews have gone viral. One of them is when the actor was embroiled in controversy for his remarks that were considered rude when discussing how women dress.
While promoting his film "Mood Of The Day" with co-star Moon Chae Won in 2016, Yoon Seok was asked about appropriate attire for a date. The actor suggested that women wear see-through clothing to show interest in men.
"If a woman wears such see-through clothes on a date with me, I would think she's interested in me. Otherwise, if she wears them secretly, she doesn't like me," said the star of the drama "Hospital Playlist." Yeon Seok's comments were relatively ignored by Chae Won, who reportedly wore a turtleneck and pants most of the time.
The actress whispered to the hosts about her displeasure, which did not go unnoticed. However, Yeon Seok overheard it and joked, “That’s why you don’t have a girlfriend.” His remark only made the awkwardness of what had just happened worse.
The incident soon became a trend on social media platforms, with netizens slamming it. Yeon Seok has come under fire for his apparent objectification of women, as well as his suggestion that the way a woman dresses determines whether she is interested in a man.
However, some have defended him because the actor was simply sharing his preferences for how he dates. " Disrespectful! How can you say such things? [sic!] ," one netizen wrote. " This is just her opinion. Everyone has different tastes [sic!] ," another added. " Well, I think it's rude [sic!] ," another netizen said.
