Hwang Dong Hyuk, the director of " Squid Game ", revealed the character of Seong Gi Hun played by Lee Jung Jae. In an interview session with GQ released on YouTube on Thursday December 26, 2024, Dong Hyuk revealed the fact that the character of Gi Hun was created because he was inspired by someone he knew.
"First, I created the character of Seong Gi Hun based on someone I know," Dong Hyuk explained, which of course surprised the public. He continued, "First of all, he is a loser in the eyes of society. He was laid off, divorced because of his low income. He lives with his mother, and often visits the racetrack.
I created Gi Hun to depict a middle-aged man who is lost in our society." Hearing the director's confession, Lee Byung Hun seemed quite surprised. He then guessed, "So, you projected yourself onto him," which was only answered by Dong Hyuk with a chuckle.
Furthermore, Dong Hyuk did not deny that he reflected himself in the character of Gi Hun. Seeing Jung Jae play the character reminded Dong Hyuk of himself when he was still in college. "Gi Hun has elements of my past self. Gi Hun resembles me, although Lee Jung Jae is definitely much more handsome.
Going to the racetrack with a jacket and hat, my friends commented that he resembled me when I was in college. They asked if I dressed him up like my college self," Dong Hyuk explained. Although Gi Hun is depicted as a mature man who fails in many ways, Dong Hyuk still provides one advantage that other characters don't have.
"He may be a loser who fell on hard times, I wanted a character who has goodness in his heart, like a child," he said. That's why, the audience can't hate Gi Hun's character, even though he has many shortcomings. "There's a scene where he tries to win a prize, after losing his money at the racetrack, he jumps up and down for joy after a child gets a prize for him.
He looks childish for his age, but Lee Jung Jae plays his character so well that the audience can't hate him even though he's a wounded person," concluded Dong Hyuk. Meanwhile, the second musical "Squid Game" has aired on Netflix on December 26, 2024. Unfortunately, this series received a lot of criticism from the audience because the storyline was considered slow.
Luckily, Gong Yoo's role as Choi Han Kyul was able to raise the reputation of the drama. The actor showed his total acting as a psychopath. As discussions heat up over the reception of Season 2, attention has already turned to Season 3. While the first season consisted of nine episodes, the current season has been trimmed down to seven.
Industry sources reveal that Seasons 2 and 3 are being produced simultaneously, with the third part currently in post-production. The next chapter is scheduled to be released in the first half of 2025, though an exact premiere date is still under wraps.
