On Wednesday December 4, 2024, Choi Sang Yeop, who is the vocalist of the famous Korean band, LUCY, apologized for the controversy he caused. The controversy started when Sang Yeop responded to a fan's message about his Polaroid camera by calling it a "Paper-popper (Jong Yi Ssa Gae)".
When the fan asked, "What is a paper popper?" Sang Yeop explained, "When you take a Polaroid photo, the paper comes out." Many fans criticized Sang Yeop's chosen use of the word, noting its similarity to "Blood Popper" (Pi Ssa Gae), a derogatory term used in male-dominated online communities to refer to women during their menstrual period.
After the comments sparked controversy, Sang Yeop eventually issued an apology via the Bubble platform . He said, " I realize that the words I sent through Bubble have disappointed many people. I deeply apologize for causing concern to those who support me due to my careless choice of words ."
Sang Yeop explained that he had no other intention when he said the words that were considered demeaning to the woman. However, he admitted that his carelessness may have hurt some people because of his words. " The words I used were completely devoid of any other meaning or intent.
However, I am deeply reflecting on my carelessness and will make sure I am more careful moving forward. Although my apology is late, I would like to send this message to sincerely apologize to those who were disappointed ," he continued. He then concluded, " I will act more carefully in the future.
Once again, I sincerely apologize to everyone who supports me ." Even though he has apologized, in fact there are still netizens who are not satisfied and think that Sang Yeop's apology is not sincere. They admitted that they were still surprised by Sang Yeop who was so careless in using such impolite words to interact with fans.
