Moana 2 once again dominated the North American box office in its second weekend on the big screen. The sequel managed to collect US$52 million from 4,200 theaters in the North American region. That's a 63 percent drop from its debut at the box office last weekend, but it's enough to secure Moana 2's spot at the top of the North American box office.

To date, the second Moana film has grossed $300 million domestically and $600 million globally. This box office haul is getting closer to Moana (2016)'s $643 million global total. As reported by Variety on Sunday December 8, 2024, Moana 2's dominance over the weekend was due to the lack of major competitors.

A24's horror-comedy film Y2K was the only competitor to score US$2.1 million. The second highest-grossing film at the box office this weekend was also taken by Wicked. The musical earned US$34.85 million in its third weekend in theaters.

Wicked's box office haul has held steady for three weeks, grossing $320.5 million domestically and $455 million globally. Meanwhile, Gladiator II came in third with $12.4 million. That brings the sequel's domestic box office haul to $132.7 million, while Gladiator II's global box office total is $368 million.

Moana 2 is a direct sequel to the animated film Moana which was released in 2016. The script for the film Moana 2 is still being worked on by Jared Bush who is now assisted by Dana Ledoux Miller. Miller also served as director, collaborating with David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand. Moana 2 even became Miller's directorial debut.

Moana 2 is once again enlivened by previous stars, including Aulii Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk. But this time, Moana 2 also presents many new cast members, such as Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Huallai Chung, Awhimai Fraser, and Gerald Ramsey.
