Korean drama 'When The Phone Rings' is currently popular among drakor lovers because its storyline is full of plot twists since the beginning of its broadcast. The drakor starring Yoo Yeon Seok (Baek Sa Eon) and Chae Soo Bin (Hong Hee Joo) has also gained high popularity on Netflix.

Tells the story of Baek Sa Eon who underwent a cold marriage with Hong Hee Joo because it was the result of an arranged marriage, where Hong Hee Joo could not speak or was mute. However, it turned out, the audience was surprised when Hong Hee Joo could actually speak.

This also made many drakor lovers theorize about the reason. Hong Hee Joo is known to only speak to herself or to her biological father. Although the reason she pretends to be mute is not yet clearly known, hints as to why she does so have been shown in the first two episodes of When The Phone Rings.

One of the reasons Hong Hee Joo pretends to be mute could be due to a tragic incident she experienced in her childhood. Despite living a luxurious and comfortable life, Hong Hee Joo apparently experienced misfortune in her childhood. She was told to be separated from her biological father since childhood. Her mother left home and divorced, then remarried a rich man.

Hong Hee Joo lived separately and far from her biological father, leaving trauma and inner wounds in her. Another theory is that the reason Hong Hee Joo decided to pretend to be mute was to keep her current family secret. Her mother is said to be married to the owner of Cheongwon Daily, Hong Il Kyeong (Choi Kwang Il) who has a lot of money.

After having a new family, Hong Hee Joo had to keep the fact that she was not Hong Il Kyeong's biological child a secret. This could be the basis for Hong Hee Joo's decision to remain silent and not speak at all until she was thought to be suffering from selective mutism, especially since she was also separated from her beloved biological father.

Hong Il Kyeong is said to have had a daughter named Hong In A (Han Jae Yi) from a previous marriage. Hong Hee Joo then had to live under the shadow of her half-sister, and Korean drama lovers theorized that this was also one of the reasons Hong Hee Joo chose to pretend to be mute.

In the second episode of When The Phone Rings , Hong Hee Joo tells her biological father who has dementia that she has to live in silence as Hong In A's shadow. This could have been requested by her stepfather or her mother, but what is clear is that Hong Hee Joo cannot live in a conspicuous way even though she is the daughter of the Cheongwon Daily conglomerate.

Therefore, it is easier for Hong Hee Joo to just keep quiet and not say anything. Another theory states that Hong Hee Joo had an accident that shocked her in the past to the point of selective mutism, then gradually recovered and chose to remain silent in When The Phone Rings .

Those are some theories about why Hong Hee Joo pretends to be mute in the Korean drama When The Phone Rings. There are still many unsolved mysteries in the romantic mystery drama. Korean drama lovers can enjoy When The Phone Rings on Netflix, and it airs every Friday and Saturday.
