The producer of the drama "Marry My Husband" named Kim Dong Gu recently had an interview with local media. One of the things he discussed was his success in working on the drama "Marry My Husband" which achieved the highest rating of 12 percent.

The cast of “Marry My Husband,” including Park Min Young, Na In Woo, and Lee Yi Kyung , also received significant attention. Reflecting on the project, Dong Gu said, “I was so excited when I first read the script for ‘Marry My Husband.'” Dong Gu added, “I thought, ‘If we do this right, it’ll be great.'”

Although the drama eventually managed to gain a large audience, “Marry My Husband” was not initially well-received. The storyline of "Marry My Husband," in which a woman travels back in time to get revenge on her husband for cheating on her with her best friend, was criticized as a "makjang" (overdone) drama.

Park Min Young has repeatedly rejected the drama. "Park Min Young initially refused about three times. However, I persuaded her, saying, 'Trust me, there's a good reason for this.' After much persuasion, she agreed and performed brilliantly," said producer Dong Gu. He also revealed Min Young's struggles.

"She lost so much weight to play a cancer patient that her bones were visible, showing incredible dedication. She is the best actress I have ever worked with in my 17 years of producing dramas," she continued. Producer Dong Gu attributed the success of "Marry My Husband" to its appeal to female viewers.

"The core story of the drama is memorable because women in Korea, historically and even in modern times, have lived under oppression and hardship. Since the majority of drama viewers are women, I was confident that the drama would attract attention, and it did," he said.

In the future, producer Dong Gu plans to continue focusing on narratives that reflect societal trends. "If you look at the protests in front of the National Assembly right now, they are led by women in their 20s and 30s. Women drive societal trends, and this also applies to dramas.

Stories centered on women will become more prominent and gain more attention in the future," the producer added. However, producer Dong Gu stressed the need to reduce production costs to revive the struggling drama market.

"This may be an unpleasant reality for those involved in production, but we need a realistic strategy to survive. Throwing money at skyrocketing costs for actors and writers is unsustainable. Even the best products can't sell if the market collapses," he concluded.
