"Squid Game" is one of the most popular dramas from South Korea. When season 1 became a global sensation, many actors were lining up to star in season 2. However, Son Suk Ku was revealed to have rejected the drama twice. This was revealed by a close acquaintance of Suk Ku to the media Newsen recently.
"While at his old agency, he was asked to play the role of Sang Woo, played by actor Park Hae Soo , but he turned it down after much consideration," said the acquaintance. The close acquaintance also added that they did not expect "Squid Game" to become a big hit.
"At that time, Son Suk Ku and his agency were actually interested in the drama, but did not know it would become a big hit," the acquaintance added. "It would be a lie to say that, after season 1 became a global sensation, they didn't feel a little regret. Still, I remember us consoling each other, saying every role has an actor who is meant to play it," he recalled.
According to an acquaintance, Suk Ku still received an offer to star in "Squid Game 2," but turned it down again. "Although he intended to appear, after receiving the script, his main role was already somewhat confirmed," the acquaintance said.
"As the cast lineup for actors Im Siwan and Kang Ha Neul has been confirmed, there are concerns and differences of opinion about the amount of screen time & main storyline. He is also scheduled to film the Disney+ drama 'Casino'," the acquaintance concluded.
Previously, Suk Ku had discussed "Squid Game" when appearing on a TV program in 2022. "From the director's perspective, the drama felt very fresh. Unlike the usual death game of killing each other, it was very touching to see the atmosphere of team building and cooperation," said Suk Ku.
On the other hand, "Squid Game 2" features a variety of characters with colorful pasts and none of them feel forced. There's a mother and a child, an idol, a pregnant woman, and even a transgender woman. It proves that everyone's circumstances can drive them to risk their lives to pursue the ideals they dream of.
While the plot may be slow, the new characters are tastefully written and just as interesting. As for the gameplay, "Squid Game 2" is as fun as ever. The first game Red Light Green Light (which became iconic to the series) is included again and more games are introduced into the season.
