Ryan Gosling is confirmed to star in the film Star Wars : Starfighter which is scheduled to be released in May 2027. The Barbie actor will team up with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy to create the latest installment in the Star Wars saga. The film will be set about five years after 2019's Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.

Details of the film were also announced at a fan event in Japan, Star Wars Celebration, held on Friday April 18, 2025, where viewers were able to see Ryan Gosling's childhood Star Wars-themed bed sheets. "It's always been there, like cultural DNA. For me, it shaped my idea of what film is," the actor said as he stood on stage for a panel with Levy.

Ryan Gosling also praised the film's script, which he considered very good, full of adventure, very touching, and had authentic characters. "This is an opportunity to shine a light on a side of the universe that we may not have discovered," said Ryan Gosling. Having the same statement as Gosling, Levy also said that the film will be produced using a new and authentic method.

"Because obviously you're producing 'Star Wars,' you're working on something that's so beloved, it's scary, you're scared, you're nervous, you just want to get it right," Levy said. "But we felt that with this story, with this partnership, we could do something right," he continued.

"I had heard that my movie was going to star Ryan Gosling and, believe me, that was a dream come true for me," Levy told the crowd at the time. "So today, I just want to tell you in this room that the rumor is 100% true." "(It's) not a prequel, it's not a sequel, it's just giving us the Star Wars DNA that we love but with a whole new adventure," Levy explained.

"(It's) a world that we've never seen on screen." "(There are) so many opportunities to tell a Star Wars story that has all the heart and action and fun of Star Wars, but does it in a new and original way." Meanwhile, Star Wars franchise owner Lucasfilm has firmly stated that the latest film will be set outside the Skywalker saga as a stand-alone film.

"This film is an all-new adventure featuring new characters set in a time never before seen on screen," Lucasfilm said in a statement. The Star Wars universe has taken off since Disney brought the franchise to the screen in 2012. Star Wars now has an original Skywalker trilogy as well as a series of spinoff films and series.

Between 2015 and 2019, Lucasfilm released a new Star Wars film every year, including The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker, for the Skywalker series and the standalone titles Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The Star Wars franchise has also expanded to streaming services with new titles, such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor on Disney+. The next film in the franchise, The Mandalorian & Grogu, is a spin-off project from The Mandalorian series, helmed by director Jon Favreau. The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to hit theaters in May 2026.
