South Korean actress Gong Seung Yeon revealed her past, experiencing financial hardship due to a lack of acting offers after her entertainment debut. She shared her painful experience while guest-starring on tvN's "You Quiz on the Block," which aired Wednesday (May 20, 2026).
The actress who played Queen Mother Yoon Yi Rang in the drama "Perfect Crown" only reached her peak after 15 years in the acting world. Despite her fame through various popular projects, she admitted there was a difficult phase when job offers began to decline drastically.
"There was a time when I didn't get any roles at all. I think it was because my acting skills weren't good enough. If I were good, maybe I would have continued getting roles, but at that time I just wasn't good enough," said Gong Seung Yeon.
The lack of new projects directly impacted the actress's finances, depleting her bank account balance. These financial difficulties left her unable to meet basic needs and routine payments. "I can't pay the rent, I can't even afford health insurance and pension," said Gong Seung Yeon.
Prolonged economic pressures forced Twice's Jeongyeon's older sister to vacate her residence and move back in with her parents. During this time, she focused on improving her acting skills by attending numerous auditions and deeply exploring various characters.
For the sake of total role, the woman who also starred in the drama The First Responders even had to do quite extreme research when involved in the Aloners film project. "I even tried all the cigarette brands because there was a smoking scene in the film Aloners," said Gong Seung Yeon.
The interview with host Yoo Jae-suk drew attention because it omitted any discussion of Gong Seung Yeon's involvement in her latest drama, Perfect Crown. It's suspected that tvN deliberately omitted the segment because Perfect Crown is currently sparking controversy in South Korea.
