The latest Korean drama 'Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid' has officially announced its main cast. Choi Woo Shik, Mun Ka Young, and Heo Nam Jun are confirmed to lead this large-scale historical series.
This drama, adapted from a popular webtoon, is a reinterpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale, 'The Little Mermaid.' Set in 1926 in Gyeongseong during the Japanese occupation, the plot focuses on Kang Ui Hyeon, a man who dedicates his life to the nation's independence, and Su A, a woman who risks her life to protect him.
This project is sure to attract great attention because it is being worked on collaboratively by director Heo Jin Ho, who is famous for the film 'Christmas in August', and director Yoo Bum Sang, who successfully directed the drama 'Twinkling Watermelon'.
In addition to the three main actors, this drama also strengthens its cast with the involvement of senior actors Yoo Jae Myung, Kang Han Na, Kim Yeo Jin, and actress Gong Seung Yeon who will give a special appearance.
The tension in the story will be further fueled by the character of Kang Geun Hyung, played by Yoo Jae Myung, namely Eui Hyeon's biological father who is willing to use his son for political gain with the Japanese.
On the other hand, the underground movement of the fighters will be supported by Han Yeon Kyung, a tough woman played by Kang Han Na, as well as Hwang Soon Im played by Kim Yeo Jin, the owner of the Whale Star cafe which provides a secret hideout for the activists.
Actress Gong Seung Yeon is also confirmed to take on an important role as Yeo Yoon Hwa, the daughter of Su A's employer who often acts curtly but actually has deep concern for her servant.
According to the production team's official report, the planning process has been completed and the drama 'Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid' is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
