Netflix's live-action adaptation of the popular web novel and webtoon "Solo Leveling" has garnered widespread fan attention, but Byeon Woo Seok's portrayal of the lead character, Sung Jin-woo, has drawn mixed reactions.

While the project is highly anticipated due to the global success of the original, many fans and critics are skeptical about Byeon Woo Seok's ability to handle such a demanding role.

"Solo Leveling" follows the journey of Sung Jin-woo, an E-rank hunter who, after experiencing a near-death experience at the Gate, gains unimaginable power and becomes humanity's last hope against the threat of monsters from the mysterious Gate.

Netflix announced the series in July 2025 with an impressive star-studded cast and high production values, including dynamic action sequences and cutting-edge visual effects created by a world-class global VFX team.

However, despite much buzz, Byeon Woo Seok has been the target of sharp criticism from Korean netizens. Many doubt he can portray the physical and emotional depth required for the role of Sung Jin-woo.

Critics have pointed to his previous role in the MBC drama "Perfect Crown," which was criticized for historical inaccuracies and cultural insensitivity, as well as Byeon's performance, which was considered awkward in some scenes, as reported by the Korea JoongAng Daily.
