The polemic of BTS 's mandatory military service has been discussed since last year when the oldest member, Jin, turned 30 years old. Many support BTS to continue serving in the military, but there are also those who feel they deserve waivers considering the achievements of RM Cs globally.
South Korea's Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Park Bo Kyun, finally spoke up about this. Attending the National Assembly's inspection of administration, he revealed that BTS's military service issue will be decided in December 2022. One of the lawmakers, Lee Yong Ho, asked Minister Park to review the issue of BTS's mandatory military service.
Minister Park finally gave an answer. "The issue of BTS member Jin's military service will be decided in December 2022. But the ministry will resolve the matter as soon as possible," said Park Bo Kyun. "We review this issue comprehensively by looking at various aspects, including national defense is a sacred duty, military service is a symbol of justice," he continued.
"BTS has made Korea known as the pioneer of Korean culture and created huge economic benefits. Then there is the issue of equality between popular artists, including BTS, and those who are involved in the arts. This will affect the group when one member of BTS is serving in the military.
There will be results from the analysis of public opinion and the opinion of male citizens in their 20s, and others," said Minister Park. Meanwhile, Jin is the eldest member of BTS who was born in 1992. Currently, he is 30 years old (Korean age) so he must undergo military service according to the amendments to the 2020 Military Service Act.
If the law is finally passed, then BTS will be exempt from military service. However, if this exception does not apply, then Jin will have to undergo military service in early 2023 and be followed by other BTS members in the following years. Regarding this, HYBE Labels and BigHit Entertainment have not spoken yet.
