Airing since July 2023, the Barbie film is said to be the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history. This new achievement even beat the popularity of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 which was broadcast in 2011.
Reporting from the Variety report on Sunday August 27, 2023, Barbie made a profit of US$18.2 million from 12,852 screening locations on the global stage. This figure has also increased Barbie's income to US$1.34 billion or the equivalent of Rp.20.4 trillion since its broadcast on July 19.
After successfully surpassing Harry Potter, Variety said Barbie's next target is to beat The Super Mario Bros. The film is still in first place with the highest grossing films at the box office in 2023. The animated film by Illumination and Nintendo was recorded as achieving global revenues of US$1.359 billion.
Previously, Barbie had already broken another record at the start of its broadcast. Barbie started her slick performance by setting a record as the film with the best box office debut this year, which amounted to US$162 million. Barbie then topped the domestic box office for four weeks in a row.
The film made by the talented hands of Greta Gerwig also made the director set a new record as a solo female directed film with the highest box office income of all time. Through the various successes of this Barbie film , ComicBook reports that Mattel, as the foundation of the Barbie company, is officially presenting a new animated series on Netflix which will be available next September.
Netflix and Mattel have officially announced that the new title Barbie: A Touch of Magic will premiere on September 24. The Barbie film is in the spotlight after releasing a trailer which shows the best acting from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling who play Barbie and Ken.
The storyline also attracted the public's attention by highlighting the social problems experienced by women in the world, so that quite a few viewers said they were touched after watching the film. Barbie also hooked the names of other big stars, such as Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Michael Cara, America Ferrera, and others.
