The film Crazy Rich Asians was officially adapted into a Broadway musical by Warner Bros. Theater Ventures and novelist Kevin Kwan. Adapting from the Variety page on Friday April 19, 2024, director Jon M. Chu, who previously directed the film Crazy Rich Asians, released in 2018, will work on this adaptation.

Crazy Rich Asians originally came from the popular novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan. Then the story was adapted to the big screen and was successful at the box office, bringing the name of director Jon M. Chu to an A-list reputation.

In 2021, Chu launched a stage adaptation of the Broadway musical In the Heights by Quiara Alegria Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Chu is now set to make his Broadway debut as director of the musical Crazy Rich Asians .

The film Crazy Rich Asians  stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh. The story is about Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), an American-Chinese lecturer, who is in love with a handsome man named Nick (Henry Golding).

When they went to Singapore to attend the wedding of Nick's friend, Colin Khoo, Rachel found out that her lover was actually a descendant of a very rich person in that country. Since then, Rachel and Nick's love story has been surrounded by various polemics coming from various directions.

One of them is Eleanor Young, Nick's mother (Michelle Yeoh), who does not approve of their relationship because Rachel does not come from a rich and elite family like Nick. The film was a huge success at the top of the box office during its three weekend run and grossed $239 million globally.

A sequel adapted from Kwan's Chinese novel Rich Girlfriend is currently in development. However, it was reported that there were problems after one of the screenwriters, Adele Lim, withdrew due to problems with the difference in pay with white male screenwriters.

Crazy Rich Asians is one of several blockbuster films currently being adapted into a live musical , along with La La Land and The Devil Wears Prada. Currently, stage versions of several films such as Back to the Future (1985), The Notebook (2004), and Water for Elephants (2011) are also being shown on Broadway.
