Seoul Yongsan Police have decided to drop Yoo Ah In's sexual assault case due to lack of sufficient evidence. Yoo Ah In will not be handed over to prosecutors on rape charges filed by a man against him, according to local officials on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Previously, a man in his 30s reported Yoo Ah In to the police on July 14, 2024.
He accused the South Korean actor of raping him while he was sleeping in a studio apartment in the central district of Yongsan, Seoul earlier that month. Based on local laws regarding sexual crimes, Yoo Ah In was charged with sexual assault equivalent to rape, as the incident involved victims of the same gender.
The police then summoned Yoo Ah In on August 28, 2024. The facts of the charges were known based on the reporter's statement, witness statements, and CCTV footage around. Yoo Ah In's lawyer, Bang Jeong Hyeon immediately denied the allegations. "As I said at the beginning, the contents of the complaint are not true," he said.
"We ask you not to speculate any more about this case." After a series of questioning of the accuser and the accused, the police have determined that the case lacks sufficient evidence to be forwarded to the prosecution. The decision cleared Yoo Ah In of charges of homosexual sexual assault .
Along with the investigation into the sexual harassment case, Yoo Ah In was also being investigated for drug abuse . In early September 2024, Yoo Ah In was immediately detained in court after being sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 2 million won or equivalent to Rp. 23 million for a drug case.
"There are concerns that he may attempt to flee," the court said regarding Yoo Ah In's detention after a hearing on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. After hearing the verdict, Yoo Ah In remained silent when responding to questions from the media as he entered the courtroom. He bowed his head and expressed his regret. "I apologize for causing concern and worry to many people," Yoo Ah In said.
Yoo Ah In was charged with abusing medical propofol 181 times between September 2020 and March 2022, and illegally obtaining more than 1,100 sleeping pills under someone else's name 44 times between May 2021 and August 2022. He was also charged with smoking marijuana with his accomplice, Choi and three other acquaintances, and attempting to destroy evidence.
