The Wicked 2 film has officially moved up its release date to November 21, 2025. The announcement was made directly by Universal Pictures, which was originally scheduled to release on November 26, 2025, or moved up five days earlier.
As reported by Variety on Thursday September 12, 2024, the change also canceled the screening of Wicked 2, which was originally scheduled to coincide with the animated sequel Zootopia 2. This change in release schedule was also previously experienced by the film Wicked which is preparing for release at the end of 2024.
The musical film starring Ariana Grande experienced a change in release from November 27, 2024 to November 22, 2024. The new schedule also means that Wicked will no longer meet Moana 2, but will still have to be released alongside Gladiator II.
Wicked has previously been rescheduled several times to avoid competing with other blockbusters. Wicked was first announced for December 25, 2024, but the release was moved up to avoid competing with family films later in the year, such as Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
It is suspected that the schedule change pattern will also be implemented for their second film, Wicked 2, which has the potential to compete with Zootopia 2 considering the same demographic aspect of the audience, namely children and families.
However, there is no further information regarding other blockbuster films that will be released on November 21, 2025. Wicked is a feature film project directed by Jon M. Chu with Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz as screenwriters.
This film is an adaptation of the musical stage play Wicked which was also adapted from the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995) by Gregory Maguire. Meanwhile, the Wicked character is taken from the legendary novel titled The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.
The novel was previously adapted into a film by MGM in 1939. Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as the main characters. In addition, there are also a number of hit actors joining the film, such as Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, and Ethan Slater.
