The Lego Group and Universal Pictures are strengthening their collaboration by presenting three new film projects directed by renowned blockbuster film directors. According to a report from Deadline on Saturday October 2, 2024, Universal and The Lego Group have chosen Patty Jenkins, Jake Kasdan, and Joe Cornish to lead their respective projects which are currently in development.
Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians of The Lego Group will produce, while Matt Reilly, EVP of Production Development at Universal, and Jacqueline Garell, Director of Production Development, will oversee the entire production process.
Jake Kasdan will direct the film from a script by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul (The D-Train), which was developed from an original idea and early drafts by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows (Animal Friends). On Patty Jenkins' project, she will write the script with Geoff Johns. Jenkins will also produce the film through her production company, Wicious Pictures.
Meanwhile, Joe Cornish is working on a rewrite of a previous draft written by Heather Anne Campbell (Rick & Morty) based on an initial concept from Simon Rich (Man Seeking Woman). The exact approach that will be taken in these three Lego-themed projects is still unknown, but Lego IP has been successfully utilized creatively since the two companies collaborated.
Since the release of The Lego Movie directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in 2014, the franchise has been a huge box office success. This led to the release of The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part , Lego Batman , and The Lego Ninjago Movie . Together, the films grossed an estimated $1.1 billion in theaters.
The live-action format will open a new chapter for Lego. So far, the Lego films that have been released have all been animated. The animation choices have been the most appropriate for Lego characters, given their rigid, non-human forms. So, it will be interesting to see how the live-action Lego films will present their own world.
