Sonic the Hedgehog 3 topped the North American box office in its debut weekend on the big screen, coming in at No. 1 with $62 million from 3,761 theaters. This revenue was achieved after Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was predicted to be the Sonic trilogy film with the lowest total revenue.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3's figures actually surpassed the achievements of the first film, Sonic the Hedgehog, which earned US$58 million in February 2020. As reported by Variety on Sunday December 22, 2024, this situation is in contrast to the debut of the film Mufasa: The Lion King, which was less than satisfactory in the first week of its release.
Disney's The Lion King prequel Mufasa debuted in second place after taking in $35 million from 4,100 theaters. That's a poor start for a film that is said to have cost more than $200 million to produce and about $100 million to promote worldwide. Despite mixed reviews, the Mufasa film has a number of things going for it, most notably an "A-" CinemaScore from audiences.
Meanwhile, Wicked shot into third place with $13.5 million from 3,296 theaters. The Ariana Grande-starring musical has earned $383.91 million domestically and $571 million worldwide after five weeks. Wicked also slightly outperformed Moana 2, which earned an additional $13.1 million from 3,600 theaters in its fourth weekend of release.
The animated adventure film from Disney grossed a total of US$359 million in North America and US$790 million worldwide. On the other hand, Gladiator II dropped to sixth place, behind Homestead, with $4.45 million from 2,397 theaters, bringing its domestic total to $153 million.
Another film in Ridley Scott's 25-year Gladiator series, it has grossed $416.2 million at the global box office. The record is a good thing for cinema operators but not for Paramount because the sequel to the sword and sandals film is said to have cost a huge production budget of US$250 million.
