Actress Jeon Jong Seo is back in the public spotlight after her social media posts sparked controversy. On Monday December 30, 2024, Jeon Jong Seo shared several photos on her Instagram account with the caption, "Still filming today..."
In one of the selfies, she is seen wearing a white tank top and bolero, sitting in a car with her hand on her cheek, displaying a tired expression. However, this upload was not well received by most netizens because it coincided with South Korea's national mourning period .
The South Korean government has declared a seven-day mourning period, from December 30, 2024 to January 4, 2025, following the tragedy of Jeju Air Flight 2216 on Sunday December 29, 2024. The plane, en route from Bangkok to Muan International Airport, crashed into the outer wall of the runway upon landing, causing a fire that killed 179 of the 181 people on board.
As a mark of respect, major broadcasters canceled year-end award ceremonies and postponed entertainment programs. Many celebrities and public figures used their platforms to express their condolences and mourn the tragedy.
However, Jeon Jong Seo's post showing personal activities was deemed insensitive by some netizens. They felt that she should have shown solidarity with the victims and their families through a more appropriate message. However, some people also think that the pressure to participate in collective mourning is excessive.
They argue that each individual has their own way of responding to tragedy, and not everyone has to adhere to these unwritten norms. After the controversy grew, Jeon Jong Seo decided to delete the post. Currently, he is busy filming a film tentatively titled "Project Y", where he will star opposite actress Han So Hee.
Jeon Jong Seo is also known to be in a public relationship with director Lee Chung Hyun since 2021. The controversy has highlighted the South Korean public's sensitivity to celebrities' actions amid a national tragedy, while also opening up discussion about the boundaries between personal expression and social responsibility.
