Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu died at the age of 48, due to pneumonia after contracting influenza while on vacation in Japan. Her older sister, Dee Hsu, confirmed Barbie Hsu's death to Taiwan's TVBS News on Monday February 3, 2025.

“Our whole family came to Japan for a trip, and my dearest and kindest sister, Barbie Hsu, passed away from pneumonia caused by influenza and sadly left us,” said Dee Hsu. Barbie Hsu died leaving behind her husband Koo Jun-yup, a DJ. 

She is survived by her 10-year-old daughter Wang Hsi-yueh and her 8-year-old son Wang Hsi-lin, the children of her marriage to her ex-husband, a Chinese businessman, Wang Xiaofei. Barbie Hsu is a big name in the Mandarin-language entertainment world who rose to fame after starring in the TV series Meteor Garden in 2001.

The Meteor Garden series was dubbed into many countries, and made Barbie Hsu a big star in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. In Meteor Garden, Hsu plays Shancai, a poor student from a middle-class family who attends an elite private school and finds herself entangled in a love affair between the heirs of wealthy families.

Members of Taiwanese boyband F4 (Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu, Ken Chu, Vic Chou), who play rich kids who have a crush on Shancai. News of Barbie Hsu's death sparked a wave of grief among fans who expressed their sympathy and condolences on social media. Hsu became the top trending topic on Chinese social media, Weibo, on Monday morning February 3, 2025. 

Some fans posted that Hsu has a history of epilepsy and heart disease. He was previously hospitalized after having a seizure. Ken Chu, Barbie Hsu's Meteor Garden co-star, posted a blank black image on Instagram, as well as a group photo with Hsu. "What a surprise," he wrote.
