The film Shrek 5 will not be released in 2026. Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation confirmed this news. Previously, DreamWorks announced Shrek 5, which will be released in July 2026 to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary.
The three main cast members: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, are returning for this installment. Actress Zendaya joins the new cast as Shrek and Fiona's daughter. Not long after, the production house changed the broadcast date to December 23, 2026.
Now, the broadcast date has changed again to June 30, 2027. The production company did not explain the reason for the release date change. This date was released several weeks after a spin-off film based on the Donkey character was in the works.
Eddie Murphy explains that work on Shrek 5 is still underway. A teaser was shared on Thursday, February 27, 2025. The short teaser shows the character Donkey (Eddie Murphy) asking a mirror, “Hey Magic Mirror, who is the fairest of them all?” The Magic Mirror replied, “Why Shrek! Of course.”
Then, the Magic Mirror shows its 21st-century side by showing a contemporary visual, which elicits a response from Felicia and Fiona. Shrek asks, "Who makes things like this?" In addition to the Donkey spin-off, the Shrek world also expanded with the Puss in Boots films.
