South Korean actor Jang Dong Joo, currently starring in the latest SBS drama, No Tail to Tell, experienced an unpleasant incident. His phone was hacked, he was blackmailed, and he lost billions of won.
Jang Dong Joo revealed the motive for the online robbery via his Instagram account, as reported by the Korea JoongAng Daily on Thursday (January 29, 2026). He said he was contacted by an unknown number last summer.
He received a message, downloaded the Telegram app, and then had her phone remotely controlled by the perpetrator. This turned his life upside down. Jang Dong Joo lost years of hard work in the South Korean entertainment industry.
"Since that day, I've been living in a never-ending hell. I couldn't escape (from the perpetrator) even though I've changed my number many times," he said. He also hinted at threats from the extortionist.
He was also forced to ask for money from his family, borrowing money here and there, to comply with the extortionist's wishes. Now Jang Dong Joo has lost a lot of money, accumulated a lot of debt, and is under mental stress. "I had no choice but to do what the hacker asked," he continued.
"I lost the ordinary life I wanted to protect, the people around me, and the happiness of my family. My attempts to protect secrets and lies to borrow money only created more lies. When I finally realized what had happened, I saw that many people had been hurt because of me.
No matter how hard I tried to escape, I felt trapped in a swamp that I couldn't escape," said the actor, who was born on October 25, 1994. In the same post, he also apologized to everyone who felt harmed by this incident.
He also uploaded a threatening message from the perpetrator. In the message, the perpetrator claimed to have access to all of Jang Dong Joo's photos, text messages, and phone records. There were also instructions for downloading and installing the Telegram app on his phone.
