Taylor Swift is taking legal action to protect her identity amid concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The American singer-songwriter has filed for trademarks for her voice and image.
Her company, TAS Rights Management, filed three trademark applications on April 24, 2026. Two of them cover sound marks, namely for the phrases 'Hey, it's Taylor Swift' and 'Hey, it's Taylor,' as reported by Variety.
Another application concerns a visual trademark depicting Taylor Swift during her The Eras Tour concert. In the image, she is seen holding a pink guitar with a black strap, wearing a colorful, sparkly bodysuit, and silver boots.
This move is believed to be a safeguard amid the growing risk of AI abuse that allows celebrities' voices and faces to be replicated without permission. The filing was first spotted by intellectual property attorney Josh Gerben, who later explained its potential implications.
"In theory, if there were ever a lawsuit regarding the use of AI that imitates Swift's voice, she could claim that the use of the trademarked voice violates her rights," he explained, as quoted by Female First. He also added that visual protection has a similar function.
"By protecting her signature visual elements—from her costumes to her poses—Swift's team has additional legal grounds to prosecute manipulated or AI-generated images that resemble her," he continued.
This move comes shortly after Taylor Swift was also embroiled in a trademark dispute over the name of her album, The Life Of A Showgirl. The album, released in October 2025, was sued by writer Maren Wade, who claimed the title infringed on her trademark, 'Confessions of a Showgirl.'
In fact, the trademark application for the album was rejected by the United States Patent and Trademark Office because it was deemed to have similarities with a previously registered trademark.
