South Korean actors IU and Byeon Woo Seok made an apology to the public regarding their latest drama, Perfect Crown. The drama aired on Saturday, May 16, 2026 with 12 episodes.

Perfect Crown is set in the Korean era of the constitutional monarchy, which tells the story of Seong Huiju (IU), a businesswoman who wants to marry Prince Ian (Byeon Woo Seok) for status. Ian, who is a prince, also has nothing but his status.

In episode 11 of the drama Perfect Crown, South Korean netizens criticized the drama's background as if it were under China. The scene in question is Prince Ian being crowned the new King.

The people shouted "Cheonse" (a thousand years) a term for a subordinate state rather than using "Manse" (ten thousand years) which symbolizes the symbol of an independent state.

The alleged Chinese subordinate was also getting sharper when Prince Ian wore a guryumyeonryugwan, a crown worn by the Chinese people and not the shipimyeonryugwan used by the emperor of the independent state.

In the last episode, the production team released a statement saying, "We take the criticism we receive seriously." Monday, May 18, 2026, IU and Byeon Woo Seok used their Instagram accounts to write an apology. They felt guilty because their scene had provoked criticism.

"For several days, I carefully read every comment left by the audience. As the main actor of the drama, I feel that I failed to show responsibility and disappointed and I am very sorry. Even now, my heart feels heavy," wrote IU.

"Regarding various historical issues in the drama that was appointed, I apologize and reflect without reason because I acted without delving deeper into the elements," he explained. He felt that as an actor, he could read the script more deeply and study it, but he didn't do that.

"I will always remember the valuable criticism and opinions you sent and in the future, I will become IU who will delve into the project with a more assertive attitude. I'm sorry again," he said, closing the letter.

Actor Byeon Woo Seok admitted that during the acting process in Perfect Crown, he did not delve into the historical context that became the elements of this drama. Therefore, he felt guilty for not delving into this drama.

"Over the weekend, I was worried that my words could cause harm. With a heavy heart, I am writing this to those who feel uncomfortable because of the drama," wrote Byeon Woo Seok. "In the process of filming and acting, I don't think enough about the historical context and its meaning that the audience will see.

Through the words of the audience, I reflect and see myself and as an actor I feel I have to take on a project with responsibility, not only acting but also the message and context that the production brings," said the actor.

Byeon Woo Seok closed his letter with, "I sincerely apologize. I also thank everyone who cared about Perfect Crown and Prince Ian and gave advice. In the future, I will be an actor who chooses projects carefully. I'm sorry."
