BTS has decided not to submit music for nominations for the 2027 Grammy Awards this year. All members announced this on their respective social media accounts. Their actions were allegedly a criticism of the Grammys, which were perceived as categorizing Asian music.
Asian music is distinguished from the main categories. "We have decided not to submit our work to the Grammys this year," wrote RM, Suga, V, Jungkook, j-hope, Jin, and Jimin. "We want music to be heard and loved for what it is, rather than categorized by region or language," they said.
They firmly conveyed their message of rejecting such things for music. Last June 2026, the Grammys announced a new category: Best Asian Pop Music Performance. The Recording Academy, the organization behind the Grammys, decided to create a new category specifically for Asian musicians, including K-Pop, J-Pop, C-Pop, and others.
This then raises a big question: Do Asian musicians have no chance of being nominated for major awards, such as Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist? BTS's rejection of the Grammys is certainly a cause for concern.
After a four-year hiatus, BTS released their album Arirang, breaking numerous music records. Claims that the BTS performance video was removed in response to the group's decision have not been officially confirmed. The Recording Academy has also not provided a public explanation as to why the video is currently unavailable on its website.
