In tvN's latest drama entitled Four Hands, Two Sonatas, Song Kang shows a more vulnerable side as pianist Kang Bi O. This character struggles with pressure, betrayal, and different past memories in his relationship with music.
Song Kang plays Kang Bi O, a perfectionist pianist with extraordinary talent who becomes increasingly depressed under the control and expectations of his mother, Kang Ji Hye (Yoon Se A).
In one of the latest episodes, Bi O listens to classical music in the study of his grandfather, Kang Seung Woon (Jung Jin Young), and remembers his childhood when he loved music only for its own enjoyment.
These memories contrast sharply with the present, where sitting at the piano has become tied to the expectations of others rather than one's own pleasure.
Song Kang conveys this change through subtle shifts in Bi O's gaze and expression. Bi O's relationship with Choi Jung Yo ( Lee Jun Young ) also changes after Bi O learns the truth Jung Yo has been hiding.
Feeling betrayed by someone he had begun to trust, Bi O pulls away from Jung Yo's grasp when she calls his name and returns to his room. When Bi O then stops responding, Ji Hye goes to check on her son and finds him collapsed on the floor.
The episode ends there, leaving Bi O's condition uncertain. Rather than overexaggerating Bi O's emotions, Song portrays the mounting pressure, loneliness, and sense of betrayal through controlled expressions and body language.
The contrast between Bi O's childhood memories and his current performance further emphasizes how much Bi O's relationship with music has changed. Four Hands, Two Sonatas, starring Song Kang, airs every Saturday and Sunday at 9:10 PM KST on tvN.
