The actress who plays the main character in the film Barbie , Margot Robbie, finally spoke out after not receiving a nomination at the 2024 Oscars. This response came after many people complained about the injustice that Margot Robbie received after starring in the world-famous film Barbie.
However, Margot Robbie admitted that she didn't need to be sad because she didn't get a nomination for the 2024 Oscar. Public disappointment also came after the announcement that the 2024 Oscar nomination list had been released.
In the announcement, Barbie was recorded as having received eight nominations in a number of categories. Unfortunately, Margot Robbie did not make it into the Best Actress category. In fact, director Greta Gerwig failed to get a nomination in the Best Director category.
"There's no need to be sad when you understand that you have been blessed this much," said Margot Robbie during a discussion at SAG-AFTRA, reported by Variety on Wednesday January 31, 2024. "I think Greta should be nominated for director. What she did is a rare thing in a career, once in a lifetime," he continued.
Nevertheless, the Barbie film still received the main nominations at the Oscars through the Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay categories. In the Best Picture category, Greta Gerwig's name is listed as the scriptwriter with Margot Robbie who is the producer.
However, there are still many people who are disappointed and even annoyed because Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig failed to enter the 2024 Oscar category in their own name. In fact, one member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as the organizer of the Oscars claimed that this incident was a real form of patriarchy.
"I admit to being saddened by these statements, which they very much deserved, but were ignored," a source told People. The source also revealed that there are comedy genre factors that can have a big influence on the success of a film at the Oscars.
"The problem is that this is a film, yes it is a comedy, but it has already pocketed US$1 billion. How can you not give credit to the director?" he continued. "How many female directors have generated that much box office revenue? That film is a phenomenon," he said again.
