Netflix has unveiled the trailer and release date for the documentary Black Barbie. This film was made by Shondaland, the company owned by Shonda Rhimes which also worked on Grey's Anatomy and Bridgerton.
Adapted from the official Netflix page on Thursday June 6, 2024, the Black Barbie documentary will premiere on the Netflix streaming platform on June 19. This film is said to be not just about dolls. Black Barbie celebrates the powerful role of three black women at Mattel who helped develop Barbie.
This film tells how Black Barbie was first created in 1980 and discusses the importance of representation and how dolls can influence children's identities and imaginations. " I felt there was something really powerful about it. I played with those dolls as a kid. We also have an exciting opportunity to add more information to the documentary.
We've added interviews and visited Mattel ," Shonda Rhimes told Variety some time ago. In Black Barbie , there will be interviews with Shonda Rhimes, as well as two other women who helped design the first Black Barbie, namely Kitty Black Perkins and Stacey McBride Irby.
This documentary was produced, written, and directed by Lagueria Davis. Lagueria Davis is the niece of Beluah Mae Mitchell, a black Mattel employee who in the 1960s first called for a more representative doll.
Black Barbie is the latest project included in Shonda Rhimes' overall deal with Netflix. The deal also includes Bridgerton which has just released the first half of Season 3. The second half of Season 3 of Bridgerton will air on June 13.
While Black Barbie will air on Netflix later this month to cover the creation of the first Black Barbie in 1980, Barbie fans are also wondering if there will be a sequel to one of 2023's highest-grossing films, Greta Gerwig's Barbie
At this time it has not been confirmed that there are plans to make a sequel, although Greta Gerwig previously stated that she does not rule out the possibility of a sequel as long as there is a story worth telling.
