ATEEZ's San was recently accused of experiencing racist treatment after attending the Dolce & Gabbana show in Milan, Italy. On July 2, 2024, San attended the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda show. On that day, San wore a brown top inspired by a Baroque sculpture, matching wide-flare pants, and patent derby shoes.
Next on July 3, 2024, San also attended the 'Alto Sartoria' men's fashion show, this time wearing an elegant white suit. Although her elegant appearance at the event was absolutely stunning, fans were outraged after claiming that she experienced discrimination during the fashion show.
A photo of San watching a fashion show was shared, showing that his chair was the only one without a cushion. The space also looked cramped, making him look uncomfortable. When the controversy spread widely on social media, San immediately clarified it through a live broadcast on Sunday July 7, 2024.
"Of the 10 outfits prepared by the brand, this one is my favorite. It's an opportunity to show various looks, and considering the identity of haute couture, the Alta Moda show, I wanted to try it," San was quoted as saying by KBIZoom.
He added, “I myself sat like that without a pillow. I am sad because there was a misunderstanding.” Regarding discrimination and unpleasant treatment at the event, San tried to clarify things so that fans would not misunderstand.
"I spoke to Grandpa Dolce (Domenico Dolce) at dinner and he said nice things like, 'Italy loves you.' He really treated me with a lot of affection and kindness," he added. Finally, she explained that the controversy was just a misunderstanding and that the problem lies with her large body and her fashion style.
Overall, San proved to fans that there was no racial discrimination going on and said that the event was one of his most unforgettable experiences. Meanwhile, Dolce & Gabbana has previously faced accusations of racism against Asians.
In 2018, the brand released an ad featuring an Asian model with an emphasis on “slanted eyes” using chopsticks to eat pizza, sparking accusations of racism. In the 'Dolce & Gabbana Summer 2016 Campaign' shoot, only Asian models eat pasta with their hands and napkins around their necks, sparking further claims of racism.
