A sequel to The Wild Robot is reportedly in development. The new animated film from DreamWorks is based on Peter Brown's children's book and has already been shown in several Indonesian cinemas. The Wild Robot has been a huge hit, scoring a Certified Fresh 98% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and audiences, and grossing over $100 million worldwide in just its first two weeks of release.

According to a report from Deadline on Sunday October 13, 2024, the sequel to The Wild Robot has begun work. Director Chris Sanders, who previously directed the film How to Train Your Dragon, confirmed by saying, " 100% true, there are plans for a second (film) ,"

The Wild Robot story tells the epic adventures of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, or commonly called "Roz"—who is stranded on an uninhabited island. She must adapt to the harsh environment and slowly build relationships with the animals on the island. In addition, Roz also becomes a foster parent to an orphaned swan.

The film's voice cast includes Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O'Hara, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. Given the positive reviews and box office success of The Wild Robot, it's no surprise that a sequel was immediately in development.

Interestingly, this marks the second DreamWorks animated film to jump-start an original franchise in the past two years, following the children's book adaptation The Bad Guys which was released in 2022. A sequel, The Bad Guys 2 , is scheduled for release in August 2025.

DreamWorks often launches franchises in quick succession, with Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon launching in the late 2000s, and Trolls and The Boss Baby launching two series within a five-month span in the mid-2010s.

However, these two new franchises are the first truly original series that DreamWorks has developed in-house in the five years since the first release of The Boss Baby. At the same time, DreamWorks also continues to have success with continuations of existing franchises such as Kung Fu Panda 4 and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
