'Squid Game' has made history as one of Netflix's most successful series. However, actor Son Suk Ku has drawn attention for turning down roles in both seasons. This decision was revealed through an interview with a source close to the actor, who revealed the reasons behind the rejection for each season.
In the first season, Son Suk Ku was offered the role of Sang Woo, a character that was eventually played by Park Hae Soo. Sang Woo is the central figure in the story, an investment team leader who is trapped in a deadly game due to huge debt.
His role is very important, being the finalist in the final conflict against Gi Hun, the main character played by Lee Jung Jae. As reported by Allkpop, the source explained that Son Suk Ku and his agency at the time, SBD Entertainment, had read the script enthusiastically, but ultimately decided to reject the offer.
The decision was made in 2019, before 'Squid Game' became an unexpected global phenomenon. The source admitted, "After the huge success of the series, there are of course some regrets. However, we console ourselves by saying that every role finds the right actor." In the second season, many assumed that Son Suk Ku would reconsider joining.
However, the situation was different. When he accepted the offer, most of the main roles had already been filled by actors like Im Si Wan and Kang Ha Neul. In addition, for security reasons, he was only given a snippet of the script which made it difficult to understand his character's involvement in the story.
His already busy schedule for filming the Disney+ series 'Big Bet' was also a strong reason for turning down the role. Although not part of 'Squid Game', Son Suk Ku once shared his thoughts on the series when he appeared on the JTBC Movie Room program in 2022.
He praised the unique concept from a directorial perspective, particularly the teamwork element in a deadly game that usually emphasizes individual conflict. Meanwhile, 'Squid Game' season 2 has continued to reap huge success since its release on December 26, 2024.
The series ranked first globally in Netflix's TV category at the end of 2024, according to FlixPatrol data reported by Allkpop. This second season focuses on the conflict between Gi Hun who returns to the game for revenge and Front Man, a mysterious figure who awaits him.
Despite not being part of the big history of 'Squid Game', Son Suk Ku is still known as a talented actor with wise career decisions. His decision to turn down the role shows that every actor has unique considerations in their career path, while also reminding us that success doesn't always come from obvious choices.
