Kang Hye Won is set to return to acting with an interesting role in the latest drama ' Friendly Rivalry '. This time, she plays Joo Ye Ri, a Chaehwa High School student who relies more on beauty and social status than academic grades.
In a recent interview, Hye Won shared her views on the character she plays as well as the challenges she faced during filming. U+ Mobile's latest drama will air on February 10 and is adapted from a popular webtoon. Carrying the mystery genre, 'Friendly Rivalry' is set in an all-girls school full of fierce competition among its students.
Joo Ye Ri, Hye Won's character, is a gossip queen who is obsessed with appearance and luxury goods. Unlike her ambitious friends, Ye Ri is known for her beauty. However, according to Hye Won, this character is more than just a pretty girl.
"Ye Ri always finds a way to survive, even if the method is not always right," she said as quoted from the Soompi page February 07, 2025. What makes Ye Ri so appealing is her ability to read other people's emotions and make calculated decisions.
"Although her actions aren't always justified, it's hard to really hate her," Hye Won added, admitting that she grew attached to the character during filming. As the glamorous Ye Ri, Hye Won also tried to show her vulnerable side.
“She cares a lot about her appearance, and I wanted to capture her anxiety and insecurity in maintaining her beauty,” she said. When asked why she chose this drama, Hye Won admitted that she was immediately captivated by the intense and fast-paced storyline. According to her, each character has a strong and suspenseful story.
She also saw this drama as a new challenge that could help her develop in the acting world, especially in the thriller genre. In addition to Ye Ri, the drama also focuses on the complicated relationships between the other four main characters: Yoo Jae Yi (Hyeri), Woo Seul Gi (Chung Su Bin), and Choi Kyung ( Oh Woo Ri.
The intrigue between them is one of the main attractions that makes 'Friendly Rivalry' anticipated.
