Director Reveals Why Go Yoon Jung Played the Lead Role in 'Resident Playbook'

Shin Won Ho, the world-renowned director behind "Hospital Playlist", recently had a talk show. The director talked about casting Go Yoon Jung as the lead in tvN's new medical drama "Resident Playbook". During the talk show, Shin Won Ho discussed the meticulous process behind casting for “Resident Playbook.” 

“Cast casting was a collaborative effort between me, the director, and the writer,” the director said. "We have developed an efficient audition process that helped us cast truly talented actors. Go Yoon Jung stood out from the start," Shin Won Ho added.

In “Resident Playbook,” Yoon Jung plays Oh Yi Young, a first-year OB-GYN resident who lives a chaotic and emotional hospital life. Won Hoo revealed that while Yoon Jung’s striking visuals may raise certain assumptions, her personality defies all expectations. "There are often stereotypes when it comes to actresses who look like her. 

However, she really breaks that barrier. She's very humble. She even described her way of speaking as being like a fifth-grader. We found that very refreshing, and it made her a perfect fit for Oh Yi Young," the director praised. Won Ho also praised Yoon Jung's talent when acting for certain expressions in "Resident Playbook". 

"There was no dispute when it came to choosing Go Yoon Jung. She's not only beautiful, she's also talented," said Shin Won Ho. Shin Won Ho further revealed, "One of his greatest strengths is his ability to maintain a neutral expression while still conveying depth, which is very difficult. He is emotionally versatile, diligent, and always willing to learn."

Meanwhile, “Resident Playbook,” which premiered on April 12, 2025, follows a group of young doctors as they navigate the early stages of their medical careers. A spin-off of the popular series “Hospital Playlist,” the drama delves into the personal and professional struggles of resident doctors as they grow into their roles.

Go Yoo Jung's performance is already attracting attention, with viewers praising her nuanced portrayal of a young doctor facing emotional and physical challenges. With Won Ho's confidence behind him and a character full of depth, Go Yoon Jung seems poised to shine brighter as the drama progresses.
