American pop musician Katy Perry and CBS Mornings host Gayle King successfully kissed Earth again after traveling into space aboard Blue Origin's Shepard rocket on Monday April 14, 2025. The two celebrities were chosen to be part of the all-female mission.
They emerged from the capsule and immediately knelt down to kiss the Texas desert, so happy to be back home after their adventure. Katy Perry poses holding a daisy and pointing to the sky in tribute to her daughter Daisy Dove Bloom, while smiling broadly after her 11-minute space tourism flight.
"It was the ultimate experience," Perry said of the trip, according to the New York Post. "I highly recommend it." Katy Perry was chosen to be the first pop star to sing in space, and she chose to perform Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World during the historic journey instead of one of her own songs.
"I don't think it's about me. It's not about singing my songs. It's about the collective energy there. It's about us," she said. "It's about making room for future women and taking up space and belonging. And it's about the beautiful world that we see out there and appreciating it," she continued. "It's all for the good of the Earth."
Katy Perry added that she was also inspired to write a new song based on her once-in-a-lifetime experience. The mission that will send Katy Perry to space is known as NS-31, because it will be the 31st flight for the New Shepard capsule rocket and the 11th manned flight.
As reported by Space, NS-31 was the first all-female space flight since June 16, 1963, when Valentina Tereshkova from the Soviet Union flew on a three-day solo journey into Earth orbit. However, Katy Perry and her colleagues did not go that long.
The New Shepard mission was only carried out for 10 to 12 minutes from takeoff to landing of the capsule. However, the NS-31 crew was above the Kármán Line, which is the boundary between Earth and outer space at an altitude of 100 kilometers above Earth.
While they didn't go very far, Katy Perry and the rest of the crew expressed their feelings about experiencing weightlessness for a few minutes while looking at planet Earth in the darkness of space. The singer even brought a special item aboard the rocket that represents her daughter: a flower named after her. After completing her space mission, Perry spoke about her accomplishment.
"This experience is second only to being a mother. That's why it's hard for me to leave because all my love is there, and I have to let go and trust that the universe will take care of me and protect me and my family and my daughter," she told reporters, as reported by People magazine.
"I feel so blessed to have the gift of being a mother, and going to space is an incredible thing, and I want to exemplify courage, worthiness and bravery." Each of the celebrities participating in Jeff Bezos' space mission appeared in space suits with a special touch to their careers. Perry's outfit features a fireworks design next to her name to symbolize her hit song, Sánchez (Bezos' fiancé).
