Choi Woo Shik has reportedly been offered the lead role in the upcoming Korean drama Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid , which is based on the popular webtoon of the same name.
According to local media reports on Friday July 25, 2025 Choi Woo Sik is considering the offer positively. The agency that manages Choi Woo Shik has also responded to this news.
"Choi Woo Shik has received an offer for Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid and is currently reviewing it," said a representative from Choi Woo Shik's agency, FABLE COMPANY, as quoted by Soompi.
The story of this webtoon, which won the President's Award at the 2021 Korea Content Awards, adapts Hans Christian Andersen's work, The Little Mermaid. The difference is, the story setting of the Webtoon is set in Gyeongseong (now Seoul) in 1926 during the Japanese occupation.
It tells the story of Kang Ui Hyeon, a man who devotes everything to his country, and Su Ah, a woman who risks her life to protect him. Choi Woo Shik was offered the role of Kang Ui Hyeon, one of the elite few who is fluent in Korean, Japanese, and English.
He ran a photo studio while working as an independence activist specializing in espionage photography and code-breaking. Although he studied law at the University of Tokyo at the behest of his father, a pro-Japanese judge, he was ashamed of his father and aspired to become a judge to atone for his family's sins.
His character forms a special bond with Su Ah, a 17-year-old girl who works as a maid for a pro-Japanese landlord. On the other hand, currently Choi Woo Shik is preparing for the release of his latest Korean drama entitled Would You Marry Me on SBS.
