XG's Cocona made a significant announcement about her identity. On her 20th birthday, she publicly revealed that she is transsexual and nonbinary. "Today, I turn 20. As I enter a new chapter in my life, I want to share something that has been on my heart for a long time.
I am AFAB (Assigned Female at Birth) transmasculine non-binary. Earlier this year, I underwent upper body reassignment surgery," Cocona wrote in a statement on her Instagram. She then elaborated on her identity.
The term AFAB refers to someone born with a female body but does not identify as female. In Cocona's case, she doesn't identify as transgender male, but rather feels more comfortable with a masculine identity, which is also reflected in her decision to undergo breast removal surgery.
"I was born and perceived as a woman, but that label never truly represented who I am. I live in a way that feels more masculine and more true to myself. The hardest thing I've ever faced is accepting and embracing myself," she explained.
"But as I slowly started to do that, a new door opened. That moment changed my perspective on the world and gave me the courage and strength to grow. Now, I can finally say: 'There's nothing wrong with who I am inside,'" she added.
Cocona also expressed her gratitude to the other XG members, producer and XGALX CEO Simon Jakops, and her parents. She said their support has been invaluable in her journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance.
She concluded her message with a heartfelt thank you. "This message turned out to be quite long, but I just wanted to say thank you for walking with me and supporting me this far. I'm so excited for the future we'll create together with XG and XGALX," she added.
XG, consisting of Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Harvey, Juria, Maya, and Cocona, debuted in 2022 and quickly captured global attention with their strong hip-hop and R&B sound. They kicked off their journey with the single "Tippy Toes," which immediately received positive reviews internationally.
