Earlier this year, Cha Eun Woo was caught up in a tax case. He was suspected of evading income tax and other taxes totaling 20 billion won. Amidst this issue, management suddenly announced a photo exhibition in Japan.
The photo exhibition, "Afterimage," is scheduled to be held in Tokyo's Ginza district. It will run for over a month, from March 28 to May 12, 2026. This photo exhibition has raised eyebrows among the public. Not only is Cha Eun Woo currently embroiled in tax trouble, but he is also currently serving his mandatory military service.
The True Beauty actor's management, Fantagio, has spoken out about the matter, explaining why they are continuing to push ahead with the exhibition project despite the issues the actress is currently facing.
"This exhibition is a project whose contract was signed in August 2024, and its implementation is proceeding according to the schedule agreed upon at that time," Fantagio said in a statement reported by Star News on Monday (March 16, 2026).
However, Fantagio confirmed that Cha Eun Woo will not be taking leave from the military. He will definitely not be attending the event. Cha Eun Woo has spoken out about this tax issue. He posted an official statement on Instagram a few days after the uproar.
"I sincerely bow my head and apologize for causing concern and disappointment to many people due to the recent issues. Taking this incident as an opportunity, I have been deeply reflecting on whether my attitude towards my obligations as a citizen of the Republic of Korea, particularly regarding paying taxes, has been sufficiently thorough," Cha Eun Woo wrote.
Cha Eun Woo said he'd been contemplating and considering the best way to go public for the past few days before finally choosing to speak out on social media and immediately apologize.
The ASTRO member used the time after his daily military service to write an apology and explanation for the issues that had dragged him into. He emphasized that military service is not an excuse to run away from problems. "I am currently serving my mandatory military service, but this was not a deliberate choice to avoid this controversy.
Last year, I found myself in a situation where I could no longer postpone my military enlistment, and thus, I enlisted without completing the tax investigation procedures," he continued. Cha Eun Woo then said he would complete tax-related procedures, both ongoing and future.
After that, he will accept the final decision from the authorities. He promised there would be no objections or resistance. "I will humbly accept the authorities' decision and bear full responsibility," he promised. He concluded his statement by publicly apologizing again, promising to be more responsible in the future and repay the public's love.
