The two-part documentary series 'Crush' (2023) about the deadly disaster in Itaewon in 2022, was nominated for the Outstanding Investigative Documentary category at the 45th News & Documentary Emmy Awards.
Produced by Jeff Zimbalist and Stu Schreiberg, the program features survivor testimonies and live footage of the incident from witnesses' cellphones and surveillance cameras. The documentary series will be released on Paramount+ on October 17, 2023. 'Crush' is currently not available in Korea due to copyright issues.
The tragedy that occurred on October 29, 2022 in the Itaewon area, central Seoul, an area famous for its Halloween atmosphere, claimed 159 lives after hundreds of people visiting the area to celebrate Halloween became trapped in a narrow alley.
The documentary series will compete with four other documentaries, including Netflix's 'Victim/Suspect' (2023), which exposed abuses committed during US police investigations of sexual assault cases.
The annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards honor the best U.S. news and documentary programming released in the previous year. This year's documentary awards show will be held on September 26 at the Times Square Palladium in New York City.
