ASTRO's Cha Eun Woo has finally spoken out about the alleged tax underpayment (assessment) amounting to tens of billions of won that has implicated him. In a personal statement, he promised to cooperate with all legal procedures.
On January 26, 2026, Cha Eun Woo posted a lengthy message on his personal social media. He began his statement by writing, "I sincerely apologize for causing concern and disappointment to many people regarding the recent issues."
He affirmed his commitment to resolving this issue transparently. "I will diligently follow future tax procedures. I will accept the final decision from the relevant authorities with humility and full responsibility," he added.
This speculation began after reports emerged that the National Tax Service (NTS) had issued a notice of income tax collection exceeding 20 billion won. In response, his agency, Fantagio, stated on January 22, 2026 that the matter had not yet reached a final decision. This latest statement marks Cha Eun Woo's first public explanation.
He admitted to self-reflection on his obligations as a citizen. "I'm deeply reflecting on whether my stance on paying taxes as a South Korean citizen is strict enough," he said. Cha Eun Woo also responded to rumors that his enlistment last year was an attempt to avoid investigations.
He explained that he couldn't postpone his enlistment any longer, so he was forced to enlist before the tax investigation was completed. He strongly denied that the military was a hideout and admitted that this misunderstanding arose from his shortcomings in communicating the situation.
Cha Eun Woo has been serving as an active duty soldier since July of last year. Meanwhile, tax authorities are reportedly reviewing the tax status of the company run by the actor and his mother.
Cha Eun Woo's side has reportedly filed for a pre-tax review and is awaiting the official results. "If I weren't in military service, I would want to meet each and every one of those who felt wronged and apologize in person," he concluded, full of regret.
