Zhang Yiyang's name went viral as the first actor to be sentenced to death in mainland China. He was found guilty of murdering his underage girlfriend. Unable to accept his girlfriend's breakup, Zhang Yiyang even tried to stage a suicide attempt.
The Xianyang City Intermediate People's Court, Shaanxi Province, recently released an investigation report into the murder case of Zhang Yiyang on February 26, 2022. Zhang Yiyang reportedly lured his girlfriend to a forest in Xingping City under the pretext of celebrating the actor's birthday.
There, the two argued over her desire to break up and separate from him. Zhang Yiyang used a pocketknife to slit the victim's throat multiple times, severing her carotid artery and windpipe. The victim died of mechanical asphyxia. Zhang Yiyang was 31 years old at the time of the crime, while his murdered girlfriend was 16.
After tragically murdering his girlfriend, Zhang Yiyang returned home to change clothes and threw the victim's blood-stained clothes and cell phone into the river. The actor, born on May 1, 1990, then checked into a hotel, where he attempted suicide. However, Zhang Yiyang's suicide attempt failed.
He was discovered by a hotel employee who then reported the incident to the police. Zhang Yiyang was arrested and charged with premeditated murder. The court deemed Zhang Yiyang's actions extremely cruel and detrimental to society. Zhang Yiyang also had a long history of manipulating victims' emotions and threatening suicide.
This prompted the court to impose the death penalty, and Zhang Yiyang was ultimately executed on December 18, 2024, at the age of 33. News of Zhang Yiyang's death sentence has attracted the attention of netizens worldwide. Many were surprised to learn that Zhang Yiyang was not included in the list of blacklisted artists. His work is still accessible and has not been removed from streaming platforms.

Many others also criticized the release of Zhang Yiyang's film, Jie You Yin Sheng Guan, in March of this year. Zhang Yiyang started his career in the Chinese entertainment industry in 2012.
He played supporting roles in several Chinese dramas such as 'Fighting Thieves' and 'Master Sound of Therapy' and also released the songs 'I Only Care About People Who Care About Me' and 'Crying Man'. Instead of being known for his work, Zhang Yiyang is remembered as the first artist in the mainland Chinese entertainment industry to be sentenced to death for his crimes.
